What is Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is non GM cotton that is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production methods replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture.
Organic cotton must be grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
What is Certified then? And who Certifies it?
Organic cotton is simply cotton grown using Organic Farming Principles. But the growers can go though certifying bodies to enlist their produce as Certified Organic Cotton. With the certification comes the assurance that the Organic growing methods have been fully complied with.
Without the certification from the certifying body no can claim their product to be Certified Organic cotton. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production.
Who are these Certifying Bodies?
There are many Certifying bodies around the world. USDA Certifies Organic Cotton in US. There are many countries including Canada that also recognizes USDA Certification. But there is a lot of bureaucracy and complications involved. Like at this time, USDA does not recognize GOTS, the EU Flower, or any other certifications. Even though GOTS and EU Flower are pioneers in this field.
As a consumer if you just want to be assured that the product you are buying is definitely organic then here is a list of Certifying bodies that we think are more than 100% reliable.
